OCO submission on the draft new Youth Justice Strategy 2020-2026

The Ombudsman for Children’s Office has made a submission to the Department of Justice and Equality on the draft new Youth Justice Strategy 2020-2026. The OCO welcomes publication of the draft Strategy and the public consultation being undertaken about it. The draft Strategy includes a range of positive features, including a focus on prevention and early intervention and on measures to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and coordination. The purpose of our submission is to propose a number of ways in which the draft Strategy could be strengthened further to more fully safeguard the rights and welfare of children who are in contact with, or who are at risk of coming into contact with, the child justice system.
