Ombudsman for Children welcomes Minister’s commitment to end sentencing of children to adult prisons

The Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, has welcomed the commitment of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone, to end the practice of detaining young people under 18 years of age in adult prisons.

“Minister Zappone’s commitment to sign a ministerial order that will end the practise of sentencing young people under 18 to adult prisons, while long overdue, is very much to be welcomed.

“I commend Minister Zappone in securing support from cabinet on this issue and I expect her to act swiftly to bring this extremely discriminatory practice to an end.

“This is a very positive development in protecting the rights of young people in the justice system. I await with interest further details on when we can expect to see this change take place.”
